Blind Faith.
I went to see ‘The Book of Eli’, twice already this weekend.
The first time I saw it, my heart was touched and right away wanted to tell people about it.
The second time I saw it, I was lucky enough to bring a friend and witness HER heart get touched, to hear that she also wanted to go and tell people about it.
I’ve just read online an interview with the directors, and one thing that Allen Hughes touched on, was that the intention of the movie was not to make a ‘Christian’ movie, but rather for the audience to decide for themselves what to really get out of it.
I’ve definitely decided what I got out of it!
Hopefully without spoiling it for those who haven’t seen it yet, I’d like to touch on a few things that made my heart flutter during the film.
Solara says, “You’ve been walking for 30 years, based upon a voice in your head. How do you even know you’re going in the right direction?”
Eli responds, “Faith—Faith enables you to keep going whether you can see or not”.
(Obviously this is nowhere near word for word, but it’s along the right lines)
Throughout the whole movie, Eli sticks to the path that was laid out in front of him, by blind faith alone. He believes he is protected, and that his journey is sacred and must be done. He also mentions somewhere in there that he knows he wouldn’t have been able to do it without help. His character is strong and saint-like, walking and fighting for what he believes to be the truth.
I don’t believe this movie is religious by any means. I believe it beautifully tells a story of faith and obedience even, as well as truth as the way to freedom.
It also portrays the evil side (which inevitably has to exist if ‘good’ exists), which spoke to me of parallels of the world we live in today. Meaning, how the bible can be used as a religious tool that controls and manipulates people into doing the will of another human being, therefore gaining power.
All in all, to me this film was refreshing, and important. A great reminder, through incredible entertainment, of faith based on His Word.
Of all the recent post-apocalyptic movies, this is my favourite so far.
